Gemstone Labs

Why are GIA, AGL, GRS, EGL, IGI and other gemological labs important? Standardization, authenticity and value are the primary reasons. These labs (or trained and certified independent gemologists) perform very important services for all purchasers of gemstones. They verify that the gemstone is what it is represented to be, that it is the size it is represented to be, what enhancements there are (if any) and the current market value. Basically it’s a gemstone pedigree.  Smaller stones usually get a “batch” pedigree.

Natural Gemstones
As science advances, so does the identification of gemstones. For example, for centuries red stones were called either ruby or garnet just because they were red. Now we know the chemical makeup of a specific types of gemstones. Now, any gemstone can be tested and identified. We now know that red gemstones can be ruby, garnet, tourmaline, spinel, diamond or other gemstone. Gemstone labs are critical for this identification.

Another example of standardization is the weight of a gemstone. The carat (with a “c” – Karat with a “k” is for gold purity) is the standard unit of weight for gemstones. It gets its name from the carob seed. Early gem traders used them as counterweights in their balance scales because carob seeds are fairly uniform in weight. The metric carat weight based on the carob seed is 0.2 grams and a “carat” weighs the same in every country in the world since the early 1900s.  Weights greater than one carat are expressed in carats and decimals, i.e. 1.08 carats.
