That's right! As the name indicates, Tanzanite gemstones are minded in the East African State of Tanzania, specifically in the hills of Merelani in northern Tanzania, and are found no where else in the entire world.
2. Tanzanites Are the Babies of the Colored Gemstone Family
Discovered by a Masai Tribesman in 1967, Tanzanites are one of the most recently discovered gemstones. Tiffany & Co. recognized the beauty and value of this alluring gemstone and after a big publicity campaign in 1968, Tanzanite gemstones took their rightful place as a popular and valuable gemstone, rivaling the big 3 (Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald), and sought after by those with an eye for unusual and stunning gemstones.
3. You Are Looking at the Blue Variety of Zoisite
Technically speaking, Tanzanite is blue zoisite. However, due to the similarity between the words "zoisite" and "suicide" the name Tanzanite was chosen instead!
4. Tanzanite Comes in Different Color Grades
Tanzanite colors can range from violetish blue to more purplish, and depending on the saturation of the color the gem is graded. The more intense and vivid colors are more valuable.
