Gold and Diamonds

Let’s talk for a moment or two about Gold and Diamond Prices.  Given the state of the economy, it is no surprise they are going up in price.  Market prices go up for commodities / durable goods and gold and diamonds being commodities / durable goods  and also things that have had value as “mediums of exchange” (money) for thousands of years, their rising prices should come as no surprise to anyone.  The interesting thing about these two commodities is their durability extends for hundreds and in some cases, thousands of years making them pretty unique.  Not many other commodities can make such a statement.

Uses for Gold and Diamonds
Did you know that it has been estimated that 78% of all gold consumed in a year is used to manufacture jewelry?  But gold is also used in electronics, i.e., cell phone, computers, dentistry, aerospace, glass making, and more. Did you know that gold prices have more than doubled since 2007?

By far and away, the most common use for diamonds is industry, mostly in cutting and polishing tools like drills.  And they are used to cut other diamonds.  Even your dentist uses a diamond drill bit.  The interesting thing is that if it weren’t for those industrial uses, diamonds for use in jewelry would be much more expensive than they are now.  The number of gem quality diamonds that are discovered in the mining of industrial diamonds is proportionately very small thereby making gem quality diamonds rare and valuable.  Mining strictly for gem-quality diamonds would be so astronomically costly that the price for even a small diamond would be prohibitive to all but the very wealthy.
