Peridot Gemstones – Real Chartruse Green Beauties

Peridot is not one of the gemstones that first come to mind when people are talking about gemstones. And that is unfortunate because it is a beautiful gemstone. True, it’s not quite the brilliant green of a tsavorite or the vivid satin green of an emerald, but it has its own unique beauty. Think olive green or think chartreuse (yellow green) and you’ll be close. The ideal peridot is a vivid olive green color with a just a hint of gold color. It is perfect for jewelry that is more along the lines of pastel and summer colors.

Colored Gemstones
Peridot has been mined for centuries.  Some believe that some of the “emeralds” that Cleopatra favored were not emeralds at all but really peridot.  They were mined on an island off the coast of Egypt as long as 3500 hundred years ago.  The Ancient Romans called peridot the emerald of the evening and it was quite a favorite gemstone.  Peridot like most gemstones goes in and out of favor and is coming back into favor again.  They have been becoming more popular since 1990 when a new deposit of sensational peridot was discovered in Pakistan and more peridot has been available.  Peridot is also mined in China, Myanmar, the USA, Africa and Australia.

Many other gemstones come in several colors but peridot comes in only one color – green.  Unfortunately, most retail jewelry stores only carry peridot in August because it is the birthstone for August.  And many retail jewelry stores don’t always carry the best in peridot when they do carry it.
