The Diamond – April’s Birthstone

While I tend to focus on other kinds of colored gemstones, I have to give the diamond the respect it is due, especially this month. I don’t think anyone would argue that the diamond is the king of gemstones. Diamonds have been loved for thousands of years. And they have had an interesting history.

Unusual Uses for Diamonds
At one time long, long ago, diamonds were thought to have medicinal qualities. Some thought that ingesting a diamond would cure your illness. I certainly don’t recommend trying this! They were also thought to heal wounds. It is said that in the Middle Ages as diamonds became more desirable and more valuable, mine owners started perpetuating the myth that diamonds were poisonous. The mine owners wanted to prevent mineworkers from swallowing them in order to smuggle them out of the mines.

Through the ages, diamonds were said to ward off evil, bring victory and good fortune to the wearer, protect against the plague and give the wearer courage and fortitude. I find it interesting that diamonds are supposed to promote constancy in a marriage and yet I have also read that for a period of time the church shunned diamonds because they were used in pagan religious rituals. I for one am happy that diamonds are the universal symbol of marriage.

Colors of Diamonds
Without a doubt, colorless diamonds reign supreme. But diamonds of color are gaining in popularity. There are yellow diamonds, brown diamonds, black diamond, blue diamonds and pink diamonds just to name a few of the colors. Natural red diamonds are the most rare. Most people have heard of “canary yellow diamonds” and there seems to be a special mystique about them. And then there is the fabulous blue Hope Diamond.
