The Stars of Sapphire Gemstones - Black Star Sapphire & Blue Star Sapphire

AfricaGems.com carries the stars of the sapphire gemstone family, star sapphires. We carry blue and black natural star sapphires in calibrated sizes, perfect for setting in a custom ring or pendant designed just for you.

Natural Gemstones

The star in star sapphire is a natural occurrence. Natural minute rutiles can occur at just the correct angles that when the sapphire is polished into a cabochon gem and then when light reflects off the rutiles a perfect 6 point star is displayed on the surface of the gem.

“What’s a rutile?" you may ask. Rutiles are typically titanium dioxide deposits and have some of the highest refractive indices and highest dispersion known to the gemstone world. It takes just the right combination of minerals and high temperature and high pressure to form a star sapphire. The interesting thing is that when a star sapphire is polished, you don’t see the rutiles, you see the star that they generate.

Star sapphires can be found in any color sapphire. When you say “star sapphire” most people will think of blue. Most times people will put a color description in front of the words star sapphire if they are talking about a star sapphire in any color other than blue.

Gold Gemstone Jewelry
The good news is that they are very durable stones because after all, they are sapphire and they make wonderful gemstone jewelry. Check out the possible black star sapphire ring shown above left or the possible star sapphire ring set with princess cut white sapphires and suitable for a guy or a gal, shown above right. And star sapphires of any color are perfect for gents rings, see the possible black star sapphire men’s ring shown below left.

There are man-made star sapphires out there but AfricaGems.com carries only 100% natural star sapphires. They are very affordable so why buy man-made?
