Gold Gemstone Jewerly

Something that amazes me is the seemingly infinite number of ways gemstones can be made into beautiful jewelry. As the son of a jeweler, you would think I had seen it all. Not even close.  I am forever amazed what new technology and computers can do with precious metals and gemstones that haven’t been done before.

When Was Gold Gemstone Jewelry "Born"?
Gold, silver and platinum have been shaped into jewelry for thousands of years. I often wonder about the first man or woman who discovered that they could take a “rock” and extract metal from it and then turn that metal into something to wear. And I wonder “who was the first person to then add a gemstone to that bit of metal?” and what gemstone it might have been. How did they figure out how the metal should hold that gemstone? Most likely the first set gemstones were “raw” so who figured out how to polish a raw gemstone to make it shine and sparkle.

Faceted Gemstones
Just look at how far gemstone faceting has come. Who figured out the geometry for just how a facet should be placed and where to get the most out of a gemstone? We now have laser fancy cut gemstones. Gemstones with unique facets like the blue topaz gemstone that is faceted with the Star of Texas in it. Gem cutters are coming up with new cuts for diamonds like the Flanders Cut or the 100 faceted diamonds all in the name of more sparkle. Jewelry designers with the aid of CAD / CAM can work precious metal into even more intricate and elaborate designs the ever before. And some jewelry designers combine new and old in designs. Etruscan design has been around since the 7th century BC and it is still popular. Another design feature is enameling. It has been around for centuries and is still highly valued. Add a modern design with enameling and you have a WOW piece of jewelry. Check out the award winning piece of enameled jewelry by Gene Berdnik shown on the right.
