Gemstones & Fine Minerals from Merelani Tanzania

Gemstones and Minerals from Merelani Tanzania
I just had the extraordinary pleasure of viewing some very fine gemstones from Tanzania a few days ago from a fellow gemstone dealer and mineral specimen dealer whom just returned from a 3 week buying trip to Tanzania.
I just love to look at fine gemstones, especially "fresh" gems that have just been unearthed from the ground after a few millions years of rest!  The Mahenge region of Tanzania has again been producing the incredible quality of pinkish red spinels we have seen in the past.  These gems have such a fine luster and brilliance and make such incredible spinel jewelry.  Their are some extremely fine and large parcels of rough spinels that have not been sold in Arusha but expect to see some super fine gems shortly.

I also had the unique pleasure of viewing some gem quality crystals of grossular garnet, tanzanite and even ruby!  Viewing these mineral specimens just shows the incredible diversity of interesting and popular gemstones that originate in Tanzania, especially the Merelani region near Arusha.  For those interested I suggest picking up a copy of the current Mineralogical Record, which is devoted excluively to Merelani minerals.  It highlights the discovery of Tanzanite in the 1960's and other valuable gemstones since that time.  It also has magnificent images of the finest gem crystals to ever be found from that region.  It is a treasure for my gem library!

Tanzania is ground zero for the colored gemstone industry right now.  The most popular and interesting gemstones are being produced there and it looks like that will be the case for the foreseeable future.
