What is zircon? Because of its name, zircon is often confused with cubic zirconia, also called CZ, which is a man made laboratory grown diamond imitation. Zircon does come in a clear color and it has been used as a diamond substitute, but zircon is a 100% natural gemstone from the earth. Because of the similarity between its name and CZ, zircon doesn’t always get the respect it deserves. That lack of respect also helps make zircon a very affordable gemstone.
Loose Gemstones
Zircon is not a “new” gemstone. It has been used in jewelry since the middle ages. In the middle ages, zircon was said to aid sleep, bring prosperity, and to promote honor and wisdom in it owner. It is rare because it isn’t mined everywhere. It is primarily mined in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar and Australia. I get the best of the best from Cambodia, but production from there has been a hit or miss affair for years now. I pick the best from larger lots and pass on the rest. The blue zircons I carry are intense deep blue color with a subtle greenish undertone and usually free of inclusions.
