Colored Gemstone Matching
To be a matched pair, they have to be matched by size, color and tone. That can be a daunting task because every gemstone is a unique creation of nature.
Many gemstones are pleochroic. About now you might be saying to yourself “What?” Pleochroism has to do with the absorption of light waves by a stone when that stone is looked at from different directions. It is what creates the unique color qualities in a gemstone as well as adding “richness” to the gemstone. Tourmaline, amethyst, rubies and sapphires are examples of dichroic gemstones (two color). Tanzanite, some tourmalines and alexandrites are examples of trichroic gemstones (three colors). It is also one of the things that really make “matching” gemstones really difficult.
Matching size in larger free size gemstones can also be very difficult. One would not want to re-cut a larger stone and lose carat weight just because it matches the color and tone of a smaller stone.

How about a larger matched pair of tanzanites set in a by-pass ring with diamonds (pair shown on right)? Impressive! Or a matched pair of red spinel earrings (pair shown on left) surrounded by diamonds. Definitely not something you would see everyone wearing.
