Moonstone is a member of the feldspar family and is a close cousin to labradorite.  White moonstone is in the orthoclase branch of the family while rainbow moonstone is in the labradorite branch.  Both white and rainbow moonstone is usually cut as a cabochon cut gemstone.   It is most often seen as a translucent opaque gemstone that makes an excellent substitute or complement to pearls.  While there have been transparent moonstones found, these are very rare indeed.

Rainbow Moonstone

Moonstones were prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans and were tied to the moon goddess of Egypt, Isis, Selene and the Roman goddess Diana believed to be the goddess of the moon.  It also has a long history in other cultures and religions (including Hindu) and many believe it has many beneficial mystical effects, such as to help create emotional balance, inner tranquility and insight for both men and women. The list of possible mystical effects is too long to list here. It is also thought by many to be a great gemstone for love – after all, think of all the poems, stories and love songs that have been written because of moonlight and many believed that moonstone captured the moonlight.
