Moissanite Comes to AfricaGems.com

What a strange name for a gemstone but probably not any stranger than Morganite or Kunzite.  All were named for the men who discovered them.   Moissanite was named for Henri Moissan, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1906.

A True Star is Born in the Gemstone World
Natural Moissanite is a mineral that came to Earth as part of a meteorite that crashed into the Arizona Desert about 50,000 years ago.  Fragments of the meteorite were scattered for many miles when the Earth and meteorite collided.  Hidden in those fragments was a mineral that has more fire and brilliance than a diamond.  Henri Moissan studied those fragments and the new mineral late in the 19th Century.
What a find!

It may be interesting to note that Henri Moissan was of the belief that diamonds could be synthesized way back in the 1890s.  He even attempted to synthesize diamonds but he failed.  How fascinating that he identified the mineral silicon carbide, a mineral that has qualities that make it rival a diamond.  In 1905 the mineral was named Moissanite in his honor.

Moissanite Today
The not so good news is that because the meteorite mostly vaporized on impact with the earth, the remaining silicon carbide samples are too small to be polished into gemstones and used in jewelry.  And that’s where Charles and Colvard, Ltd. comes into the picture.  In 1998 Charles and Colvard officially debuted synthetic Moissanite.  And what an amazing synthetic gemstone it is.

Synthetic Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale - making it harder than a sapphire; it outranks diamond in overall toughness (resistance to scratching, breaking or chipping); it has more fire and brilliance than a natural diamond.  And it more affordable than diamonds.  What’s not to love about Moissanite?
