Colorful Cabochons Come to AfricaGems.com

We at Africagems.com are so very pleased to offer our newest collection to you - that of colorful cabochon cut gemstones in many natural gemstone varieties.  We have always carried some cabochon gemstones, but we have greatly expanded our selection.

Did you know that the word cabochon comes from the Middle French word caboche which meant head? And since cabochon gemstones are polished in a domed shape similar to the top of the human head, that actually makes sense.  Most cabochon gemstones do not have facets but instead are smooth.  Most but not all cabochon gemstones are translucent or opaque rather than transparent.   For example, turquoise will always be opaque but rutilated quartz will be either transparent or translucent depending on the quantity of the rutiles in the individual gemstone.

So what gemstones do we carry in cabochon cut? 24 different gemstones in different shapes - oval, trillion, heart shaped, square or emerald shape, cushion, pear, round and / or marquise cabochons (but not all in every shape).  Feel free to check them out from our list shown below:

Amethyst      Aquamarine      Bloodstone       Carnelian       Chalcedony    Chrysoprase    Citrine     Coral      Emerald      Garnet      Jade       Lapis       Onyx        Opal       Peridot       Rose Quartz        Tourmalinated Quartz
Rutilated Quartz      Smokey Quartz     Ruby      Sapphire       Tiger Eye    Tourmaline     Turquoise

The cabochon gemstones in our collection are in standard (calibrated) sizes which makes them easier to set.

Gold or Silver Gemstone Jewelry
So, what can you do with cabochon gemstones?  Why, set them beautiful precious metals to create beautiful jewelry of course.   Retro or antique (like baroque) styles lend themselves very well to the use of cabochon gemstones.  After all, there are timeless designs that used cabochon gemstones long before the art of gemstone faceting came about and those designs are still admired these days.  They are rich and elegant.  Floral designs also lend themselves to cabochon gemstones.  Or mix faceted gemstones with cabochon gemstone (diamonds and opal come to mind) for a textural feast for the eyes.  So, what type of design is your favorite?
