Emeralds - Not Just The Gemstone of Spring

Emeralds, the birthstone of May, are such a beautiful gemstone that there is even a color and a gemstone cut named after them. In fact, the emerald cut was developed specifically because of the difficulties in cutting an emerald and now the cut is used for many other types of gemstones.

Emeralds have been highly prized for thousands of years. Incas and Aztecs of South America thought of it as a holy gemstone. Egyptian pharaohs between 3000 and 1500BC were exploiting emerald mines and those mines. Emerald green was the color of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. It is the color of life and of the springtime and it conveys harmony and elemental joie de vivre.

Emerald Gemstones - It’s All About Color

Emerald is a member of the beryl family which includes aquamarine, morganite, and green beryl. Emerald is a type III gemstone where inclusions are expected. Inclusions do not diminish the value of an emerald. In fact a deep lively green emerald with inclusions will be worth more than an almost flawless emerald with a more pale color. It is very seldom that one would find a large emerald with good color and good transparency.

You can tell where an emerald comes from based on the color. For example, Zambian emeralds tend to have a distinct bluish undertone while Columbian emeralds tend more toward a yellowish undertone. You get to decided which you like better as both are beautiful.
