This year the gemstone buzz was all about pink / red Tanzanian spinel. Hummm, that’s sort of like Oscar buzz isn’t it?? Spinels deserve their own awards as gemstones. They are hardy gemstones that can be worn every day and they come in beautiful colors including pink or red.
In 2007 in Mehenge Tanzania, there was a large find of top quality pink / red spinels that have now made their way to the gemstone community at large. And what beauties they are.
Metaphysically, spinel is a gemstone that is supposed to bring high energy to all efforts, attract money, wealth and prosperity. It is supposed to be a stone of immortality, but I wouldn’t want to test that. It is supposed to alleviate stress and depression and bring calm. Interesting that it is supposed to bring both high energy and calm.
Natural Gemstones
Spinel is a natural gemstone. They are found near their gemstone cousins the sapphires and for hundreds of years were thought to be sapphire, but they are their own “breed” of gemstone. Spinel was recognized as a separate gemstone species as early as 1587.
The most famous case of mistaken identity is the “Black Prince’s Ruby” that is in Imperial State Crown of England. It was first appeared in 1367 and made a long journey to its ultimate permanent home in the crown. It is a magnificent 170 carat (approximate), semi-polished, 2 inch across stunner. It was originally thought to be a ruby.
